Miniature Stainless Steel Parts Are Custom Manufactured for Flowmeter Application

SAINT PAUL, Minn.—Tiny, 0.0781-inch-thick stainless steel parts that were custom manufactured by a St. Paul, Minn.-based job shop are now in use on a product that measures flow and pressure in pipe lines. Fedtech Inc., a custom and contract manufacturer specializing in water jet and laser cutting, used its new Bystronic Byspeed 3015 laser to cut the 14-gage parts from 316 stainless steel sheets. After laser cutting the two mating parts, Fedtech deburred, milled, and tumbled them to produce clean edges and a smooth finish.

Fedtech reportedly custom manufactures more than 3,000 of these tiny parts per year for a company located in Boulder, Colorado. The customer is a specialized engineering firm and a subsidiary of Emerson Process Management. When the parts reach their final destination, Emerson welds a T-shape onto identically shaped extrusions to serve as an end cap. The final product, the Rosemount 485 Annubar® Flowmeter, is said to be a “growing measurement solution” for emerging markets. It has the capability to measure multiple fluids, gases, and vapors that flow through it, and is used in a variety of different applications. “It ranges from oil and steam, to water, air, and even natural gas,” says Emily Vinella, marketing engineer for Emerson.
