ERIE, Pa.—Composiflex, a global supplier of highly-engineered composite products, has entered into a strategic partnership with Sunburst Electronics to serve the aerospace and military electronics sectors, according to a recent announcement by Sunburst Electronics. The alliance, cemented via a formal memorandum of understanding, provides a single-source option for electronics equipment manufacturers seeking the benefits of complete sub-assemblies, including lightweight composite enclosures and electronic componentry.
Sunburst Electronics, based in Erie, Pa., is an electronics contract manufacturer that specializes in manufacturing electronic assemblies (printed circuit boards, chassis assembly, cables, and harnesses) for the aerospace, military, telecom, and medical device industries. The company supports projects from engineering design through manufacturing and also offers product testing services. Composiflex (www.composiflex.com), also based in Erie, designs and manufactures advanced high-performance composites, specializing in custom designs for the military, aerospace, ballistic protection, medical, industrial, and recreational markets. The company is certified to ISO 9001:2008 and AS9100 standards and is reported to be currently expanding its facilities by more than 60 percent.
“Composiflex offers nearly a quarter century of experience in composites materials, design, and manufacturing; and we are excited to respond to customer requests for more integrated solutions by entering this partnership,” said Marty Matthews, sales and marketing executive at Composiflex, in a prepared statement. “We expect Sunburst Electronics’ added-value, along with our internal expertise, to accelerate our growth in military electronics, avionics, and other markets.”
John Cline, president and CEO of Sunburst Electronics, said that the new partnership complements what he called “Sunburst Electronics’ extensive aerospace manufacturing legacy.” “As a result of this alliance, both Composiflex and Sunburst are now able to accomplish a level of technology and service not yet seen in the aerospace manufacturing marketplace by offering both existing and emerging-technology aerospace programs with a one-stop solution for product manufacturing requirements,” he said.
Recently, Composiflex has engaged in several projects to produce light-weight enclosures and racks for military, aerospace, and commercial applications. The specialized specifications of the projects led the company to undertake research and development work to determine optimal combinations of fiber, resin, and process in order to address the demanding environmental standards of MIL-STD-810. Composiflex was also able to broaden its technical expertise to include options for electromagnetic shielding, thermal management, and radiolucence.
Sunburst (www.sunburstelectronics.com) is a J-STD-001, ITAR registered facility that adheres to stringent standards spanning defect and process control, inspection methodology, and process verification inspection. The company’s quality systems are certified to ISO 9001:2008, ISO 13485:2003, and AS9100 standards.
